Artificial Turf Infill Comparison (2026)

March 9, 2026 ยท SPUNK LLC

Infill is the material spread between artificial turf blades. It weighs down the turf, supports the blades, provides cushion, and affects drainage, temperature, smell, and safety. Choosing the right infill is as important as choosing the turf itself.

Silica Sand

The most common and cheapest infill. It is simply finely ground quartz sand, typically 16/30 or 20/40 mesh size.

Zeolite

A natural volcanic mineral with a unique microporous structure that absorbs ammonia and other odor-causing compounds. The premium choice for pet owners.

Zeolite is the best infill for pet areas. Period. The ammonia absorption makes the difference between a pet turf area that smells fine and one that smells like a public restroom. Worth every penny of the premium.

Crumb Rubber

Made from recycled tires. Common on sports fields but increasingly controversial for residential use.

Multiple studies have investigated whether crumb rubber is carcinogenic. Results are inconclusive, but the EPA and many states have recommended caution. Several cities and school districts have banned crumb rubber infill on public fields.

Envirofill (Acrylic-Coated Sand)

Silica sand coated with an acrylic antimicrobial layer. Marketed as a premium alternative to plain sand.

Organic Infill (Cork and Coconut)

Made from natural cork or coconut husk fibers. The coolest and most eco-friendly option.
